Zagame’s House Sustainability Statement
The Top Line
The hotel industry is already making small consistent changes to minimise their impact on the environment. At Zagame’s House, we are trying to take those small changes further, to not only improve the sustainability of our hotel, but also educate our guests on how they too can do their part to make a positive environmental impact.
From central operations such as boilers, to lighting systems and kitchen equipment, we are working to reduce energy use while sustaining—and whenever possible enhancing—the guest experience with the environment in-mind.
The use of cleaning chemicals within the hotel industry are immense, and therefore, we have gone to great lengths to minimise this at Zagame’s House. From initial surface and bathroom designs, to day-to-day water use, water conservation is always top of mind for us.
The application of Nanotechnology coatings to all bathroom surfaces within the hotel reduces the need for the use of cleaning chemicals which are detrimental to the environment. Zagame’s House is using e Water to also support this effort, acting as a steriliser instead of chemicals. Research confirms that surfaces treated with Nanotechnology coatings improve the performance of surfaces and substrates visually and hygienically, and are antibacterial, easy to clean, neutral to skin, and non-allergenic.
Within the guest rooms, laundries, kitchens, café and gardens, we’ll continue to implement efficiencies that reduce water and, in many cases, chemicals that are used to treat water systems and clean facilities. These methods include the linen and towel reuse programs, E Water, and adhering closely to new industry standards on the installation of low-flow faucets, showerheads, and other fixtures.
Recycling and Waste Reduction
The Zagame’s House experience not only encompasses a dramatic cultural setting and a warm and distinctive style, but also the assurance that our guest’s travels leave less of an imprint on the planet.
We have implemented an internal recycling program for the daily basics including newspapers, stationery and beverage containers as a basic expectation for our hotel and its facilities. In combination with our recycling efforts, we are always looking for opportunities to reduce the use of paper and other disposables.
To reduce waste and landfill, our bathroom amenities stay away from being single use with full-sized, refillable bottles of shampoos and body wash available for all guests. We are proud to be the first and only hotel to be using the eco-friendly & award-winning Cowshed products, that feature the very best organic and wild crafted plant extracts in its shampoos and soaps with mood-boosting essential oils to nourish the mind, body and soul. These are available to be enjoyed in one of our rooms or can be purchased to take home.
With constant consideration of the importance of safer products for guests and employees as well as the natural environment, we utilise cleaning products that are made with bio-based oils and other natural cleaners where feasible. This switch has dramatically reduced the use of products with chlorine bleach and petrochemical derivatives and have proven, along with the use of e Water, to be less irritating to guests, employees, and the environment. The application of Nanotechnology coatings to all bathroom surfaces within the hotel has also reduced the need for the use of cleaning chemicals which are detrimental to the environment. We are also using e Water to support this effort, acting as a steriliser in replacement of chemicals. Surfaces treated with Nanotechnology coatings are proven to enhance the performance of surfaces and substrates visually and hygienically, and are antibacterial, easy to clean, neutral to skin, and non-allergenic.
Food Preparation and Selection
Integrating local products and using fresh, seasonal produce where possible is an important focus for our Food & Beverage operations. A shift to utilising organic produce, hormone-free meats and dairy and organic produce where possible will ensure travellers experience unique opportunities to connect to the Carlton district in a more sustainable way. At our wine bar, Lord Lygon, the salumi selection has been supplied by the world’s first approved carbon neutral meat supplier, while the wine list has a strong emphasis on locally produced wine labels, who are committed to producing low –intervention wines with minimal chemicals and environmental impacts.
We are also big supporters of animal welfare, so are working to reduce food wastage by providing pup-friendly leftovers to dog shelters in need.
The Bottom Line
From property-wide initiatives to guest rooms, food and beverage, waste disposal and cleaning, we will always encourage guest feedback to ensure we are doing all that we can to be more sustainable and make more informed choices for the environment.
